To see is to believe.
We have witnessed the truth of these words in the last few decades- the twisted corruption of what we were made to see, hear, retell, and learn led us to this religion of injustice, impunity, and violence.
To believe is to will.
We have seen the will of the people perverted in all forms grotesque. Our minds are reshaped to champion falsehoods, our hearts to praise harm, and our guts to bear the virtues of death and despair.
To will is to act.
We have seen the power of the people fall from grace. We have acted on the deceptions that gates be opened for evils of the past, not only to return but to bask in our very own temples of power.
Lies upon lies, we have seen new testaments built for the gods of gold, gossip, and gore. This is a new chapter in the stories of our nation.
But then again, it is only but a chapter. We challenge the writing of our history and seize the way we close its pages. Our chapter is beautiful, for the chapter we write is of our struggle– to envision a nation out of darkness and to navigate in an ocean of despite-ofs, in-spite-ofs, and countless even-thoughs.
Reflecting today’s distortions of realities, our so-called defeat, too, is a lie. And it will always be a lie as long as we recommit ourselves to be vassals of truth and vanguards of rights and democracy. So let us carve new paths toward future victories and build our defenses from the blueprints of our old triumphs. Let us remember it is when we reclaim each others’ sights and fiercely defend our light that we can traverse the pathways of our movements against monsters, tricksters, and tyrants.
At the end of a three-decade-old crossroad and as we brave the thresholds of a new history, DAKILA marks this period with the launching of the 10th edition of Active Vista Human Rights Festival: AVX Vision and Movement. A couple of years shy of 20 years in the innovative education spaces for advocacies and movements, DAKILA, through its Active Vista Human Rights Festival (AVHRF) continuously redraw the lines on how we face the challenges on the issues of human rights and democracy.
The challenge of our time is clear. We face new battles in an old war and wield new powers from our old arsenals. The task is to march to the rhythm of a different drum– and when we hear the singing of the new songs of old struggles – we ask ourselves to refocus on the vision and to dance to the movement for truth, justice, and humanity.
