ABOUT US

What We Do

Active Vista is an institution established in 2016 by Dakila – Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism to support its mission to build a movement of heroism towards social transformation. Active Vista facilitates the social formation of citizens to become active agents of social change. Its programs are geared to develop a broad-based constituency toward strengthening the movement for the protection and promotion of human rights and democracy in the Philippines.

Our Vision

Active Vista envisions a society that respects, upholds, and values the dignity, rights, and freedom of its people.

Our Mission

Active Vista empowers the public into contributing to relevant social transformation by building their capacity to be agents of change.

Our Goals

Active Vista facilitates the formation of social consciousness of citizens by providing education platforms and resource materials, provoking discourses on social conditions, and fostering the culture of human rights and the values of democracy towards nation building.

Active Vista builds the capacity of citizens to understand and analyze the prevailing political, economic, social, and cultural context to arrive at shared visions and actions towards paths of social change.

Active Vistas  engages citizens to participate in initiatives and efforts to contribute to social transformation by utilizing the arts, media, and popular culture as weapons to inform, enlighten and empower them, and by influencing individuals and groups to form a broad constituency and support for the movement for change.

Active Vista enables citizens to collaborate on efforts in the promotion of human rights and democracy, and drive support towards the cause by amplifying social messages and providing avenues for advocacy initiatives that bring about strategic actions for social change.

Our History: The Active Vista Journey

Prior to its establishment as an institution, Active Vista started as the advocacy film festival of Dakila – Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism, an artist-activist group founded by Lourd de Veyra, Noel Cabangon, Buwi Meneses, Ronnie Lazaro, and Tado+.

The first edition of the festival was organized in December 2008 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. With the theme, “Cinema with a Conscience,” it brought together filmmakers, civil society, government, business, the academe, and the youth to spark conversations on the power of cinema, not only to entertain, but to educate. It was followed by a series of AV Festivals, bannering the themes, “True Revolution begins in the Imagination” (2010), “Projecting Truth” (2012), and “Truth x Imagination” (2016).

The Active Vista festival from 2008 – 2016 bravely went to extremes as it travelled to more than 20 cities nationwide, bringing more than 60 human rights-themed films to more than 50,000 audiences. It trained young, aspiring filmmakers and gave production grants to more than 10 short films. In 2015, Active Vista as a program expanded its reach and interventions through the “Bayani Ba’To?” roadshow on history and heroism that presented films such as “Heneral Luna” (2015), “Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli” (2016), and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” (2018). Through the roadshow, the festival partnered with more than 40 schools engaging more than 60,000 young audiences in conversations about history, heroism, and human rights. After its transition as an institution in 2016, Active Vista holds its annual Active Vista Human Rights Festival, expanding its reach through the satellite festivals in Metro-Manila-Rizal, Laguna, Bacolod, Iloilo, Cebu, Dumaguete, and Cagayan de Oro city.

Currently transitioned as Dakila’s human rights institution, Active Vista continues to harness the power of arts, media, and popular culture in its human rights education and advocacy initiatives, developing critical thinking, facilitating the social formation of the people, shaping narratives, and collaborating with organizations towards meaningful actions in pursuit of its envisioned society.
