The true story of a young mother who uses story-telling to protect her child from the reality of growing up in prison and the difficult life she endured.

About the Director

Kip Oebanda is a Filipino director and writer. He is known for his award-winning works such as Liway (2018), Bar Boys (2017) and Nay (2017). Originally, he did not study film, with his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from San Beda College and Master’s Degree in Economics and Management from the Asian Institute Management. He was in a non-profit organization where he worked on cases in human trafficking when he saw a banner for the Asia Pacific Film School. His first film Tumbang Preso was supposedly written for class and stood against child trafficking. While making his first film, he was also writing Bar Boys, his first critically-acclaimed work. It became one of the highest grossing films of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino in 2017, and won various awards such as Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for Best Screenplay in the Gawad Urian Awards. He continued to write and produce films such as Nay, his horror film that addressed the country’s war against drugs; Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na with Jet Leyco, and Shift with Siege Ledesma. He followed these works with Liway, a film that told his own story as the child of a member of a rebellious movement.

Reviews

“Liway is an important work of cinema, especially in these trying times. As the Marcos family and their cohorts spend millions to brainwash the general public, the film’s director uses his personal narrative to tell a counter-story. Liway is an inspiration to fight back. It calls for resistance.” – Heinrich Domingo, Cinetactic

“Kip Oebanda’s Liway is not just an elegant and rousing tribute of a son to his mother, it is also a testament to the importance of telling stories.” – Oggs Cruz, Rappler
